What is Anmeldung?

Anmeldung (literally “registration”) is the process of officially registering your residential address with the local government. The office responsible is called the Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt.

Germany requires everyone — including German citizens — to register their address whenever they move. For foreigners, this is especially critical: without the Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) you receive after registering, you cannot access most services in Germany.

When you move within Germany, you re-register (Ummeldung). When you leave Germany, you de-register (Abmeldung).

Many people arrive at the Bürgeramt without this form and have to leave and rebook. Ask your landlord (or the main tenant if you are subletting) to sign it before your appointment. Download it from your local Bürgeramt website. If your landlord is slow to respond, send a written request by email so you have a paper trail.

How to do Anmeldung — step by step

Get your Wohnungsgeberbestätigung

Ask your landlord to sign the confirmation form before your appointment. Download it from your local Bürgeramt website and bring it pre-filled.

Fill in the Anmeldung form

Download the form (Anmeldeformular) for your city. Fill in your name, address, date of birth, nationality, and previous address. You can fill it at the office but doing it beforehand saves time.

Book an appointment

In most cities, you need an online appointment (Termin). Search for your local Bürgeramt and book through the official city website. In smaller cities, walk-ins may be possible.

Attend your appointment

Arrive on time with all documents. The registration takes 5–15 minutes. The official verifies your documents, enters your data, and prints your Meldebescheinigung on the spot.

Collect your Meldebescheinigung

You receive the certificate immediately. Make several copies — you will need it repeatedly: for your bank, your employer, health insurance, and more.

Appointment availability varies widely. Berlin and Munich can have waits of 4–8 weeks. Book as soon as you have your address. Most cities have online booking — search for “Bürgeramt Termin” + your city name.

What Anmeldung unlocks

The Meldebescheinigung you receive is a gateway document. You need it for almost every formal process in Germany.

German bank account

Traditional banks (Sparkasse, Deutsche Bank, DKB) require Meldebescheinigung to open an account.

Tax ID (Steuer-ID)

Sent automatically by post to your registered address within 2–4 weeks of Anmeldung.

Health insurance

Public health insurance providers need your registered address to issue your Krankenversicherungskarte.

Schufa credit check

German credit reporting requires a registered address. Needed for renting permanently.

Mobile phone contracts
